"Tomb Raider" (2018) finally came out on big screens after months (maybe years) of waiting:
infact we officially had infos about the new TR Film in end 2016 and 2017. We had an official first look at this new movie back in 2017 and we had our first teaser/trailer back in September 2017.

From the beginning we were absolutely amazed by the appearance of Alicia Vikander in Lara Croft's boots and we wanted to know more about it!

Now that the film is out, Tomb Raider Drawings decides to post a little review of the movie to make you an idea of it..every Tomb Raider fan should see it!

[If you didn't watch it already..read with caution cause there are some very little SPOILERS!..Warned you!]

I will be going through different aspects and categories of the movie and giving at the end of it a Rank: Let's Start!

TOMB RAIDER(2018)

-Directed by:  Roar Uthaug
-Starring: Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, Kristin Scott Thomas
-Genre: Action/Adventure
-Settings: London, Cape Town (South Africa)
-Plot:
Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father's global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he's truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can't understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death. Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad's last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn't be higher for Lara, who-against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit-must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name of Tomb Raider.

Direction:
As it was my 1st film saw by director Roar Uthaug, i really think he got the right way. The story itself is something new from the 2013 Reboot and it develops in a linear way, without many pauses or questions to answer. The film is quite linear and no-excessive. The Director made a really big step in this movie: don't make a copy & paste of a game..making a real game adaptation..but bringing something new, with a new story, characters and aspects!

Script:
The film script was written by a group of person, featuring Evan Daugherty, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Alastair Siddson. As i said before, i was quite excited to see something new on screen. The movie is based on the 2013 Crystal's Reboot and brings something refreshing: Lara herself is a little "badass" and "charismatic" girl from the beginning of the movie, in fact i could see in her a taste of the 90' Lara, she is determinated and knows what to do and what's her next step. Also the "mystical" aspect of the game was here replaced by a something new: Himiko's power is not as real as one could think..but..as we go on the movie, we know the real power of her. Liked the fact that they replaced the "magic" with the "scientific", which turns this movie, more real than surreal from the main Tomb Raider saga. We know Tomb Raider also for it's historical fidelty..so, you won't be disappointed

Actors:
As from the actors..all of them made a real good job. Let's talk about Alicia Vikander's performance for a moment: we know that some of the fans when they 1st saw Alicia's name as Lara Croft weren't that happy (in fact we know that some of them wanted a Daisy Ridley instead, cause of her Rey's porting in Star Wars VII). When i first saw the images and trailer from this new TR movie i was really amazed by her appearance and by her acting. I really think she took all the aspects of Lara Croft and we will be happy to see her in a new TR Movie! Alicia Vikander also was so happy and honoured to take part on this project and she took her role quite seriously, training day by day to mantain her body as she wanted to convince all the fans that she has the potential to do that. I was curious to see her on the big screen in Lara's boots and turned out i was surprised.

Walton Goggins: turned out to be a good Mathias, with his potential. It's the kind of villain i like: not perfidious and linear. He is evil at the right point. We know is quite dissimilar from the Mathias we know from the Tomb Raider 2013 Reboot, but i liked it.

Daniel Wu: he is Lu Ren, Lara's new companion in her Yamatai expedition. At first, i was surprised to not see a real adaptation of Jonah or Alex in this new movie, but, turning out it was a new refreshing adaptation, i liked his character, but it could be turned out better if he had more parts in the movie.(he doesn't follow Lara,Mathias and Richard Croft in Himiko's Tomb and that little disappointed me,cause he could turned out to be a more badass character than he is).

Dominic West: what we can say for him..he is the perfect dad for Lara Croft, and we know that! Seeing him alive in Yamatai made me really surprised and without words, as we know the Crystal Lara is always looking into her father steps (this..was a real plot twist i wasn't ready for).

Kristin Scott Thomas: she is Ana Miller in the movie (we met Ana 1st in Rise of the Tomb Raider) and we know she is the real villain of the situation. I wanted to see her in more scenes, but, for the little part we saw, she can be an interesting character that we hope to see in a future Tomb Raider film.

Special Mention to the owners of the pawnshop( where Lara wants to sold her father's necklace -similar to Lara's reboot one- for affording her trip to Yamatai, and when Lara, after her 1st adventure, buys her iconic Dual Pistols) They were kinda funny and was a part i really enjoyed!

Editing: in this new Tomb Raider Movie we can't miss the spectacular special effects made with CGI and it was quite satisfying. Some parts are more evident and a little unreal and some parts are really realistic. In complex it was good and beautiful to see! I could permit some parts to be a little unreal ( as the parachute scene) as i know it can be very difficult to make scenes like that. (00:49)

Outfits: i really can't say nothing wrong bout the outfits made for "Tomb Raider": all of them were inspired by the 2013 Reboot and they fits the place perfectly. No special effects were used to make some kind of outfits as they were all made by hand and dirtied day by day! (Alicia's outfits were tons, we have an outfit for each stage: from the beginning of the adventure -clean- to the ending -dirty and blood-) I can give them a 10 for that! Real Congrats

Sountrack: the soundtrack was made by Junkie XL and his team: i personally first listened to it before the screening of the movie and i was impressed by that..a perfect Tomb Raider Sountrack..with chill, adventure and mystery. I loved it and i listen to it day by day to relive the emotion of the Movie.

CONCLUSION:

Tomb Raider is a very good movie, a non stop action adventure full of mystery, fun and thrill! If you are a real TR fan and you were a little "skeptical" i highly recommend you to see it! It's a new refreshing adventure and a lot of fun. We also found some quite interesting easter-eggs from the previous Tomb Raider games in it..so..be sure to check them out watching it! I saw this movie twice and it made me proud to be a TR Fan! If you went to see the movie this week, be sure to send us your opinions about it..and if you didn't...what are you waiting for? Lara is waiting you!
